C-Section Birth Stories: Meghan Turner

1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

I found out at 38 weeks that my son was breech, so a c-section was the best option. I’m not sure if he flipped between my 36 and 38 week appointments, or if he was never truly “turned around” as he was supposed to be in order for me to give birth vaginally.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

The c-section itself sounded overwhelming at first, but I had a great experience and was happy with my doctor and the maternity ward staff that walked me through the procedure.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

The support from everyone was great. You don’t realize how much you truly are limited initially when you have a c-section. It’s essential to have support before you even have the surgery. As an active woman, it was difficult for me to wrap my head around the fact that I was limited in doing daily activities like taking the stairs or doing the laundry. My husband and family members on both sides were extremely helpful, even though it was so difficult for me to ask for help!

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! It’s the worst part about the c-section: you can barely move, breathe, cough or sneeze without pain, so you can’t and shouldn’t have to handle caring for your baby alone!

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

Some of us may never know what labor pains are. Some of us may never know the power of childbirth. But having a c-section made me stronger mentally and physically. As moms, we give our bodies over to our children to create, nurture and provide for them. No matter how “differently” we have our babies, we are all moms. We are warriors. C-section moms just have the battle scars to prove it!
