C-Section Birth Stories: Mekayla Mowen

1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

I was induced due to having preeclampsia at 37 weeks and 4 days. Since I was bedridden the whole time, my baby girl ended up flipping sideways into my pelvis. It wasn’t caught until after 4 hours of pushing when they realized something was wrong. At that point, I had to have an emergency c-section.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

Honestly everything. I never thought in a million years I would have one. I always had the idea of having a vaginal birth that I had never read up on a c-section. The whole process was terrifying, not knowing what was happening or going on. However, it was so incredible that they got my baby, who was wedged pretty far into my pelvis at that point, out safe and healthy!

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

My family and friends were there 24/7 always wanting to help, watch the baby, or bring us food. It was hard for me to get around after the c-section, due to the pain but having a great support group who was always willing to help was amazing.

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

It gets better - I promise. I never thought I would feel normal again after my c-section. The pain, having to sleep in a recliner, and being scared to sneeze, cough, or laugh because you were afraid your organs will fly out of your incision at any point. I promise it does get better and it will stop hurting.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

I never realized everything I could do until I had one. The days when I had no one to help with the baby definitely put it to the test while I had to care for her while being in pain. C-sections can be scary but we are warriors who have overcome something so amazing.
