C-Section Birth Storie: Ronessa Hadaway

1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

In 2018, I had my first child, my baby girl. She was breech, frank breech to be exact. While she was about 5 months old, I found out that I was pregnant with my second baby, a boy. I was feeling so much pain because my first incision was only 5 months old, and my tummy was stretching again. My doctor was originally planning for me to have a vaginal birth, but I developed preeclampsia and had to have an emergency c-section.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

The recovery time. It was rough but I am glad I got through it.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

My healthcare team was literally the best and were the same people for both pregnancies! From my gynecologist (whose name is actually Dr. Best) to the anesthesiologist and the nurses. I was well educated about what was happening. They all ensured that I was comfortable and safe from start to finish. I was assisted in any way that I needed. My family went above and beyond for me. My parents were very supportive in every way - from helping me with medical bills, caring for me, and helping me with my daughter. My husband and mother-in-law were there, step-in-step with me, along with my mother in the hospital. I got the motivation and help from them to get out of bed and start walking, help with my showers, eating, and taking my medications. They helped me through the whole nine yards. My friends could not help me physically at the start but they sure had my mental health in check. They ensured to always check up on me and truly showed that they cared.

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

I would say to be brave and just do what has to be done to bring forth your bundle of joy. It is not an easy road, but it is so worth it, so stay strong. Also, don't ever make anyone allow you to feel less of a mother because you had a c-section. Everyone's story is different. You are powerful and you matter.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

Having my c-sections made me pull on a strength that I didn't even know I had. Imagine having to breastfeed after having your abdomen cut open, and while recovering you have a baby to care for. Wow, right?! I grew endurance, I gained power physically, and I felt empowered. Like - I am that woman!
