C-Section Birth Stories: Sarah Zybert
1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
I had two c-section births. My first son was born by emergency c-section after his heart rate started dropping because I had a tetanic contraction (a contraction that would not end). I was still in early labor and the doctor was about to come in and break my water. It was shocking and scary. I was at the hospital earlier than most laboring moms because of high blood pressure. Having gestational hypertension was so stressful, but in hindsight, it was the reason that I was exactly where I needed to be to deliver a healthy son. My second c-section was planned for my due date. I hoped for a VBAC, but because induction was not an option and my first baby was on the bigger side, my OB decided it was safest to have a c-section planned as a backup. It was a much calmer and more satisfying birth experience.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
With my first c-section, I was just shocked that it happened! I had actually asked the nurse about 20 minutes earlier whether a c-section was possible because of my blood pressure complication and she said they weren't even thinking about it! Everything changed in a matter of minutes. I am forever grateful to the team that got my baby out so quickly. My second c-section experience was surprising because it was completely different! I walked to the operating room with my OB and everything was so calm. She let us know when she was about to take the baby out and it was a really special moment. Even the recovery was different! They brought my son back to me right after I was out of surgery, whereas I had to wait for a few hours with my first baby. I was able to start nursing right away! They also had me out of bed on the same day, rather than 24 hours later. It was overall an easier recovery and there was a greater emphasis on allowing mom and baby to bond as soon as possible.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
I received an incredible amount of support after my c-sections! I developed postpartum preeclampsia a couple of days after delivering my first son. I was in the hospital for almost a week. I had an amazing team of doctors and nurses! My husband was amazing. He changed every diaper and was so supportive of me during my entire recovery. Our parents, siblings, and friends were also very helpful in those first weeks. There have been times where I've felt judged or shamed for having c-sections. The hardest part is that it can come from the people closest to you who don't realize the impact their words can have. If I ever have doubts, I remember that how you become a mother has nothing to do with what kind of mother you are. My mom had four c-sections and she's the most amazing mother I could ask for.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
You are so strong! A c-section is major surgery. Have patience with yourself and allow yourself time to recover emotionally and physically. Don't be afraid to ask for help! After the drama of my first birth experience, I was terrified and anxious about the upcoming birth for most of my second pregnancy. I started therapy during my third trimester and it was a tremendous help for me.
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
I believe having a c-section birth made me stronger because it was one of my greatest fears during my first pregnancy, but when the time came all I wanted was for my son to be delivered safely! I know I can get through anything, particularly when it comes to taking care of my babies and myself. I believe my second c-section made me stronger because it forced me to have confidence in myself and trust my OB, even when outside voices questioned my decision to schedule a c-section. I am a wonderful mother and a strong woman who always strives to make the best decisions for herself and her children!
