C-Section Birth Stories: Frances Acevedo

1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

Throughout my pregnancy, baby Luna was in the Frank Breech position (her head was up where my ribs are). At every ultrasound, she was in the same position. At my 36 week appointment, the doctor suggested we schedule a c-section in case Luna didn't get into position. That day I left the appointment and just started crying in the car. I tried everything I could to flip her, but nothing worked. I had been preparing myself throughout pregnancy for a vaginal birth; all the research, all the classes, that's what I had been focusing on.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

For me personally, I've never looked down on cesarean births; I was born by emergency c-section. But it was hard to imagine my baby's birth being a certain way and then finding out it wouldn't be possible. To be honest, I was scared of having a c-section; it is major abdominal surgery.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

I started looking for information and preparing myself mentally for what was my only birth option. I asked my doctors and friends that had c-sections all the questions I could think of. By doing so, I learned so much and have found even more appreciation for all the women that have had cesareans.

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

I believe every pregnant woman should try to learn about cesarean birth, even if it's not part of her birth plan. Since my c-section was scheduled I had the time to prepare myself and set expectations, but that's not always the case for everyone. The more information you know, the better.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

On April 15th, I went into the operating room surprisingly calm and excited that I was going to meet my baby. All the doctors and nurses were so supportive - there was happy music playing, I had my husband by my side and it was a beautiful experience. Recovery has been harder than I thought, but it's getting better day by day. Everyone has their own birth story. Whether it's vaginal birth or cesarean birth, scheduled or not, medicated or un-medicated. Birth is birth and it's beautiful.
